Always a pleasure to read。

This book was just one giant drama with some intrigue and scandal mixed in there。 I shouldn't have been surprised, seeing that it's Liane Moriarty we're talking about。 It's like she writes in a way that she knows would make a good Netflix drama 😆 This book was just one giant drama with some intrigue and scandal mixed in there。 I shouldn't have been surprised, seeing that it's Liane Moriarty we're talking about。 It's like she writes in a way that she knows would make a good Netflix drama 😆 。。。more

This book is so very interesting in sneaky and surprising ways。 It's about an older couple trying to enjoy recent retirement and struggling to find structure and a rhythm without their jobs and identities。 It's about adult children struggling to live their grown up lives while coping with fierce competitiveness and failed tennis careers。 It's about a family unit that gets thrown into disarray when an interloper enters their lives。 It's about what a family looks like to outsiders and how much can This book is so very interesting in sneaky and surprising ways。 It's about an older couple trying to enjoy recent retirement and struggling to find structure and a rhythm without their jobs and identities。 It's about adult children struggling to live their grown up lives while coping with fierce competitiveness and failed tennis careers。 It's about a family unit that gets thrown into disarray when an interloper enters their lives。 It's about what a family looks like to outsiders and how much can be concealed。 It's about how quickly suspicion can be interpreted as guilt。 And it's ABOUT none of those things。 The book started out slowly。 I hadn't read any reviews other than the very brief library synopsis and I wasn't sure what to make of it at first。 There are two consecutive timelines running parallel that the reader is bounced back and forth between。 It starts out slightly confusing, but the author does a good job of alerting the reader to switches。 The switching perfectly conceals the meat of the story until the very end。 The author allows the main character's inner monologue to run。 It gives us little nuggets of her life, some of which ring very true to this busy mom。 But many of those "throw away" details became pertinent to the story。 The author masterfully sprinkles clues and red herrings throughout without being super obvious or spoon feeding the reader。 There is one very annoying detail left up to the reader's imagination at the end, which I really hate。 I just want to KNOW。 But it's pretty minor。 This book kept me guessing until the end and I really wish I had someone who had read it to talk with about it。 It would make a great movie if done right。 I don't entirely understand the title choice。 But this book has left me thinking about it, which is the mark of a good book in my estimation。 I listened to the audiobook and the reader was excellent。 She did 5-6 accents well and made it an enjoyable listen。 。。。more

I was immediately drawn into this family drama / mystery。 It was well written and kept me very interested。 I would have given 4 stars, but there was too much foul language that unfortunately brought the story way down, in my opinion。

This is the author's best book yet。 The characters are very real, the story intriguing, and the plot twists never end! This is the author's best book yet。 The characters are very real, the story intriguing, and the plot twists never end! 。。。more

Overall I enjoyed the book but it was a bit too long。 Information was included that didn’t move the story along。 (The detective’s wedding???) I did like the perspectives of the four kids。 Without spoiling it, I didn’t quite get the “big reveal” of why Savannah did what she did。 The reason was disproportionate to what she was doing。 All that over a sandwich!?!?

Loved the characters and winding of the story but really hated the ending like so many others。

In an ode to tennis I was hoping for a little more on the court action to really bring all the metaphors home。 Moriarty is a master of slowly fleshing out characters until they feel totally real, and this was no exception。 I loved learning about each person's motivations as the story unfolded。 There ultimately wasn't the sense of urgency I'm used to from her other stories so it was a little slow for me。 In an ode to tennis I was hoping for a little more on the court action to really bring all the metaphors home。 Moriarty is a master of slowly fleshing out characters until they feel totally real, and this was no exception。 I loved learning about each person's motivations as the story unfolded。 There ultimately wasn't the sense of urgency I'm used to from her other stories so it was a little slow for me。 。。。more

I love a good family drama。 This one was a little too long, but it was interesting nevertheless。

Molly

So many unexpected tidbits in this one!

Not as thrilling as others。 I had to trudge through parts of it。 My love for the author may be fading。

I really liked the twist at the end。 It gave the book a little more excitement because I felt it was a little anticlimactic。 Did not enjoy the Covid chapters at the end, totally unnecessary to the plot。 I thought it dragged a bit in the second half。 Not my favorite Liane Moriarty book, but still good。

Didn’t leave a rating because I didn’t finish it。 I felt like the book was very slow。 It didn’t feel like the story was moving。 I fell asleep at least 3 times while listening to it。 It just couldn’t catch my attention。

This summer's California audiobook started out a little slow but then it got really good。 By the end I was super invested in all the family drama and idiosyncrasies。 This summer's California audiobook started out a little slow but then it got really good。 By the end I was super invested in all the family drama and idiosyncrasies。 。。。more

Awful。

Madeleine

Stupid, boring plot。 Incredibly anticlimactic book。 You think it’ll get better and something will happen but it never does。 Boring characters and being an 18 hour audiobook you’d think it would have great character development- but nope! So incredibly long, nothing happens, and the twist at the end gets a 0/10… such a let down。 Probably one of the worst books I’ve ever read。

Asia

Too long。

2/5- such a cute ending but kind of slow!

Wow, absolutely brilliant。 Just as I was starting to believe one thing was what had happened something threw me off in another direction, time and again。 Powerful characters with great plot twists。 And some mega surprises。

This book was way too long, and I hate long books that turn out to be bad。 It’s a double punishment because not only did you read a bad book, you wasted all that time。 I found the book to be dull and most of the characters were boring, and I even feel a little manipulated。

Kristen

So incredibly boring。

This was the perfect beach read。 Her books are always compelling。 The perfect laugh out loud lines just the right number of twists and turns。 The truth of the complexity of loving real people。 The varied personalities of children you created。 I love Joy- with all her time and place choices and her wishes for her longed for grand daughter。 I personally loved the covid slant at the end even if it was a little reaching to be current。 Wasn’t that how covid hit us? I liked the familial message of the book, but I was not a fan of the actual story and the mystery’s ending。

I can simply say I liked the book, until the end。 The conclusion was just not what I was expecting。
